Game Prototyping Workshop – Brighton

We are Pete Jenkins and Vasilis Gkogkidis, two gamification experts that run GAMIFICATION+, a gamification consultancy based in Brighton.
We design gamification solutions and are both international speakers and trainers on gamification. We run quite a lot of different workshops but non as creative and interesting as this one!
Understanding how games work is extremely important to understand how gamification works. The very definition of gamification says “the use of game mechanics in non-game situations”. So we need to know more about what effects game mechanics have on players.
Join us in this workshop where we dive right into the things that make a game interesting and create exciting experiences for players.
This workshop will give you some practical experience on how to design games that will in turn help you create interesting gamification solutions. It is very exciting to see people come together and create awesome games that are super fun to play. You can have a look at what other people said about this workshop and some of the fun they had, here.
For this workshop, we will create teams and work on a game!
Each team will make a simple game using materials from our ‘magic’ box and the other teams will get to play it and give each other feedback.
All games will be non-digital, you don’t need a laptop. We will create games out of everyday objects.
The agenda for this workshop is:
1) Game mechanics
Examples of games and game mechanics that will give us an insight on what effect each mechanic has on the player.
After you are inspired by some examples of game mechanics and how they work, we will apply this knowledge to create a first prototype of your game. In this stage we just want to have an outline of what the game will be and what materials you will choose to make it.
Rules are what makes games interesting, the glue that holds everything together and tells the players what they can do and what they can’t.
4) Play Testing
Play testing is a very important stage both in games and gamification. We need to see how people react when they play our game or experience our solution. Feedback is very important in order to see what’s working and what needs improvement.
